Disposable Diapers...Blah!

What is in a disposable diaper?

Sodium Polyacrylate

Can absorb 100x its weight
Can stick to baby’s genitals there by causing irritations and oozing blood from perineum and scrotal tissues with vomiting and staph infections.
Injection into rats causes hemorrhage, cardiovascular failure and death.
Banned from Tampons in 1985 because of Toxic Shock Syndrome SO WHY IS IT IN BABY DIAPERS!?
Death in baby after as little as 5 grams ingestion
Females in the factory experience: organ problems, slow healing of wounds, fatigue, and weight loss

Dioxin (by product of bleaching)

Carcinogenic chemical CANCER CAUSING
EPA lists as most toxic of cancer-linked chemicals
In small quantities, causes birth defects, skin/liver disease, immune suppression.

Tributyl (TBT)

Environmental pollutant
Highly toxic, spreads through skin and has a hormone-like effect
Harms immune system and impairs hormonal system
Speculated that it can cause sterility in boys (since their genitals are outside body.)

Yea, lets just keep buying this crap and putting it on our babies!! Good way to spend hard earned money!!

Baby Snoopy Quilt

Here is the finished Baby Snoopy quilt. The back is the same fabric as the blue on the front. I finished the binding by hand to give it that nicer "look". Tomorrow is the baby shower and I can't wait to give this to the mother-to-be along with her adorable cloth diapers!
Quilted paw prints in the 4 corners.
Curly circles in the green squares.

Here is the embroidery of the name in the middle square.

Ugghh...

I just read an interesting article and agreed with it whole heartedly. It's about the Bratz dolls.....I cannot stand them. I think they are just awful. Trin got one for Christmas and her Daddy and I explained to her why that doll was bad and why it was going back to the store. She agreed and said she didn't want a bad doll. We explained how that doll was not being a "Jesus Princess" but being a "World Princess". I CANNOT imagine buying that doll for my children. You can read the article here.

Best Mommy Ever

My Mom made this dress for me before I started sewing. I needed a "fancy" dress for a military ball. So my Mom and I went and picked out the fabric and the pattern for it. She made this a little over 5 years ago and this is the second time I have worn it. I have a "tea party" tonight that I am going to and this is what I am wearing. Thanks Mom!
Closer pic of the dress. It's kinda wrinkled at the bottom...I did iron it, but I guess after 5 years of being "bagged up" the wrinkles were a litttle stubborn.

This is just a head shot that Shane took. He is working on "something" and needs head shots of all of us so he went ahead and took mine....and whatever it is he said the background won't be in it. And my eyes are open...

Aio #2

Here is my second Aio. This diaper is going to the same home as my last aio. This is a size newborm made with blue flames outer, flannel for the inner, and microfiber for the soaker. I still need to close this diaper and top stitch it but I have to wait till I get some blue polyester thread which won't be until later this week so I figured I would go ahead and post it. I'm getting so excited about making my own diapers as soon as I'm pregnant and find out what I'm having :)
The bootie side....I love cloth diapered booties!!!

First AIO

Here is my first aio (all in one) diaper. My friend Christi was kind enough to spare a piece of PUL so I could make this diaper which will be going to the same family that is receiving the Baby Snoopy quilt. I really love this print for a diaper and if we have a little boy next I will definitely have to make one for us too in this print.
As far as the Baby Snoopy quilt goes I have started the process for the quilting so hopefully I should have it finished soon.

Baby Snoopy

Here is the quilt top for a baby quilt I am making for a friend. They are doing the nursery in Snoopy. While searching for Snoopy fabric I happened to find a pack of 4 baby Snoopy fat quarters...I was thrilled to say the least. My friend Christi is gonna embroider the babies name in the middle blue square for me. This was my first quilt that I designed. I got out my graph paper and gave it a try and it wasn't too hard, but this is a simple design.
ps...the colors in the pics are not coming out as accurately as in person.

Mycah's New Shorts

I whipped up these shorts this morning for Mycah. I bought extra of this fabric so I could make these shorts and not only just a diaper. Mycah loves planes and helicopters.

I am also working on a quilt pattern for one of the baby gifts I am making. It is a very simple design and I am hoping to get the fabric picked out for it Friday.

Fitted Diaper

Well, here is my latest diaper using my real materials. This is a newborn fitted diaper. I used flannel for the outside and alova suede for the inside and the soaker is made from microfiber. The only thing left that I need to do is put the snaps on the flaps. This diaper is so cute and soft!

Second Fitted Diaper Attempt

Ok, this is my second diaper attempt. This one came out really good. Yes, I know the fabrics don't match but I'm still in the process of using scraps for practicing. The inside of this diaper is flannel and the outside is fleece, size newborn. Christi was kind enough to bring me the correct size elastic and some better touch tape.

Hamburger Buns!

Well, today I made hamburger buns from scratch. They're not perfect as far as their shape goes, but they do taste good! Christi was here when they came out of the oven so she got to taste one and thought they were good too. I ground up the flour for these in my new nutrimill grain mill. These were alot of fun to make, and I just love the health benifits of grinding my own flour. A few more times making these and I should have them perfected :)

First Fitted Diaper Attempt

Well, I made my first diaper today. For this diaper I used cheap flannel from Walmart for my practicing. I can't wait to start using my real materials for my diapers....and to find out what sex our next baby will be so I can start making gender specific diapers.
This diaper came out good. There are a few things that I need to fix for in the future though. I used velcro for this diaper, but my future ones will have snaps on them. All in all I think it was a great first try :)

Saoker # 5

Ok, this is just like the other soaker I made. Karina wanted two of these kind. One to dye and the other to leave natural. Anyways, all of the soakers I have made to date (minus my first) I am leaving here with Karina for her baby.

And Another Soaker

Ok, so here is another soaker. You will be seeing alot of these and diapers through out the next months :) I started this soaker on the plane and ran out of yarn, so I had Shane send me another skein and I finished it up tonight. When I get home I am looking forward to getting some circular needles and trying some of the other soaker patterns suggested to me.

Dyed Soaker

Ok, this was the first soaker I knitted. I went ahead and added the ruffle legs and dyed it. I decided Trin can use it at night since she is still in cloth pull ups at night. I wanted it to be a little more pink but I didn't add enought water, but Trin is happy with it. I'm gonna lanolize it tonight so it will be ready for tomorrow night.

Third Soaker

Ok, here is my latest soaker. I made this one for Karina with some yarn she gave me. This is a size newborn. Oh so tiny and cute! I am also working on putting ruffle legs on my first soaker. Karina taught me how to crocet them so I should hopefully be posting that tomorrow.
I know...it's gonna be pretty dull around here since the only thing I can really do now is knit soakers. I also started a soaker on the plane and then ran out of yarn, but Shane mailed me some more today so as soon as I get that I can finish my other one. The color for that one is black, grey, and white.
